A Knee injection is a procedure in which medications are injected into the knee joint to eliminate pain.
There are different types of knee injections. The most common type of knee injection is a steroid medication injected into the joint to decrease inflammation, and therefore, pain.
Another option for chronic knee pain is a genicular nerve block. During a genicular nerve block, the doctor will numb the skin and then inject numbing medication as well as steroid inflammation in order to decrease pain. This procedure targets a nerve that wraps around the knee. If the block is successful, a genicular nerve ablation is the next step. Genicular ablation, or neurotomy, is a new and innovative method to treat chronic knee pain without surgery. By selectively applying a sophisticated type of radio wave to the nerves surrounding the knee (the genicular nerves), one can effectively relieve pain in the knee from any number of causes.
Weight management, exercise, physiotherapy, medications, knee injections, and surgery are some of the approaches used to treat knee pain.
Knee pain can result from ligament or tendon injury, fracture, osteoarthritis, and inflammatory conditions such as inflammatory arthritis. Knee pain can also be due to joint malalignment or dysfunction and referred pain from other areas.
